The Comoros Overview

Overview | Approved Projects and Progress Updates | Reports

With an estimated total population of 620,000 inhabitants in 2007, the Comoros are among the least developed countries, with a per capita income dropping below $500. Since acceding to independence on 6 July 1975, the Comoros has not known any veritable period of stability. After decades of political crises and separatist tensions, considerable efforts have been undertaken since March 2008 (including the peaceful elections in June) and set the basis for reunification of the country, political reconciliation and rebuilding of national institutions. However the magnitude of the crisis and the depth of mistrust means gains remain fragile. This calls for further efforts and continuing support of the international community.

Against this background, the United Nations Secretary-General declared on 25 June 2008 the Comoros eligible to receive assistance under the second window of the Peacebuilding Fund. $9 million have been allocated from the Fund to support the ongoing peacebuilding process in the Comoros.

Comoros PBF - Priority Plan

The Comoros PBF Priority Plan [French - English] identifies the following four priority areas:

  • Security and stability
  • Governance and social cohesion
  • Revitalization of the economy with an emphasis on youth at risk and vulnerable women
  • Development of national peace building capacity / Strengthen project management capacity

Comoros PBF - Joint Steering Committee

With the country funding envelope confirmed, the review and approval of project activities is being conducted in the Comoros in a process co-managed by the Government of the Union of the Comoros and the United Nations who co-chair the Comoros PBF Joint Steering Committee (JSC). The JSC has been established at the country level to serve as the decision-making body to review and approve detailed project submissions, within the scope of the priority plan, as well as ensure oversight of PBF implementation in the country. Further information on the Comoros PBF JSC, including its membership, terms of reference and rules of procedure, is available in the Comoros PBF Joint Steering Committee Terms of Reference and Rules of Procedures (in French).
